what to charge, i find this a puzzling question whilst thinking of starting out.
many years ago i used to be a gardener, had my regulars and one offs
but, my neighbours expected a greatly reduced rate purely because there was no travelling involved
would you treat a neighbours wasp nest for a tenner?

Depending on how they went about asking, Id probably treat a neighbours nest for free, cos im a bloody nice bloke like that, and have always got on well with my neighbours. You never know when your going to need a favour from a neighbour, so IMO it pays to keep them sweet.

No i charged my nieghbour over the road the full fee, as i do with everyone, however my immediate next door neighbour NO cos we help each other and so it saves them noney and costs me next to nowt. swings and roundabouts.

I run a business so whilst neighbours "may" get a slight reduction it is not free. If your neighbour works at the garage or owns it, will he/she service your van for free. Pricing get yourself some business training on running a business, or use the search facility on site. Or are you going to phone round and undercut or charge the same? Best course I did was the pricing for profit run by BPCA, also an hour with my accountant.

I have just been to treat a wasp nest at Spennymoor , and the chap there was quoted £165 + vat by someone local to do the job. I know the wasps are getting aresive this time of year , but at that price it`s shear extortion. it took me all of 20 min to get there and do the job ........................£35.

i dont do em for £35 either, i have stuck to one price for 3 years and am set to stay at the same price this year and hopefully next year, which is why i have the price plastered all over my van. We are not by any means the cheapest, but our customers know the fixed price before they put the phone down, and they can read it all over my website. Nothing hidden and nothing added on when i see the job. Did a job in the same road and 5 doors away from the guy in Derby that was on Rogue traders for dealing with non existing nests. We can all be busy fools at £20 - £35 but why compete with others, you still have to pay your fuel, taxes, insurances, chemicals and yourself. However if you wish to think that you are making money cos you are always out there, then you carry on. My nearest rival that i can find, and as told me from my customers is £85 each nest if they can wait a week or £130 if they are wanting treatment today or first thing in the morning. how do they justify that sort of price hike, other than playing on fear, if i put my prices up i think that most customers will do it themselves and so there is no point. Also my card reader means that people do not have to have cash and they can always stop the payment if they have a problem.
